The bench
120 samples a week at three tests each and 20 minutes a test is 120 analyst hours; five analysts at 30 bench hours is 150, so the bench runs at 80% and a working week's samples turn around in four days, worked on the page before the next batch is booked in.
The test
$6.50 of reagent, $1.50 of consumables and 20 minutes at $45 an hour is $23 direct; $9,000 of overhead over 1,500 tests adds $6; the full cost is $29 and a $45 price leaves $16, 36%. The QC sheet then says what share of the bench the controls take and what they cost per reportable result.
The record
Samples from receipt to report, results against the sample, reagent lots with their expiry, instruments with their next calibration and the freezer count file themselves against the lab, so the auditor's question about last year's calibrations has the sheet to hand. Everything exports.
